`AMERICAN ART NOUVEAU offers for the first time a broad view of American art from about 1880 to 1910. Unlike most books on Art Nouveau, it stresses the wealth of American art during this period, and also gives us a fascinating analysis of its background in American life.

According to the author, Dr. Diane Chalmers Johnson, of The College of Charleston, Art Nouveau in America was no imported foreign style. She proves beyond doubt that despite its international character it had indigenous roots, and that its technical inventions and emotional reverberations correspond to American art. Dr. Johnson also emphasizes America`s contributory role in the development of Art Nouveau in general.

The great American names of the time-Louis Sullivan, the architect; Louis Comfort Tiffany, the interior designer; Will Bradley, the versatile graphic genius-are the star performers of the movement, but many other artists participated. The author describes the American public`s surprising reception of the style, so hesitant in some respects, so affirmative in others. At this, America`s first entrance onto the stage of Art, not only were Europeans sometimes unwilling to accord the new presence its due, but Americans as well were not always prepared to applaud.

The creations of this period-the skyscrapers in Chicago reborn from its Great Fire; the extraordinary paintings and the lively prints; the rich and beautiful works in glass and precious metals, the interior designs and furniture-are brought together at last in this handsome book. Forty-one superb colorplates and hundreds of illustrations make the development clear; a substantial chronology of the movement brings out some surprising priorities; in five bibliographies much material is assembled for the first time; a full index makes the whole accessible to the interested reader.`
