Wootton matured as a painter during the frantic years of World War II, when he travelled the world as an official war artist to the Royal Air Force. In 1944 he joined the Allied forces advancing in Europe, through newly-liberated France and into Belgium, painting the events and aircraft around him. Some months later he was moved to South-East Asia, where he experienced the final stages of the war with Japan. There he painted many works of life in the tropics - a world of sandstorms, intense heat and monsoon rains.
