They Live is a 1988 American science-fiction action horror film written and directed by John Carpenter, based on the 1963 short story `Eight O`Clock in the Morning` by Ray Nelson, and starring Roddy Piper, Keith David, and Meg Foster. It follows an unnamed drifter[nb 1] who discovers through special sunglasses that the ruling class are aliens concealing their appearance and manipulating people to spend money, breed, and accept the status quo with subliminal messages in mass media.

The film was a minor success at the time of its release, debuting #1 at the North American box office. It originally received negative reviews criticizing its social commentary, writing and acting. However, like other films of Carpenter, it later enjoyed a cult following and eventually became recognized as a largely underrated work. The film has also entered popular culture, and notably had a lasting impact on street art (particularly that of Shepard Fairey), while its near six-minute alley brawl between the protagonists makes appearances on all-time lists for best fight scenes.

Roderick George `Roddy` Toombs, better known by his ring name `Rowdy` Roddy Piper, was a Canadian professional wrestler and actor.

In professional wrestling, Piper was best known to international audiences for his work with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW) between 1984 and 2000. Although he was Canadian, because of his Scottish heritage he was falsely billed as coming from Glasgow and was known for his signature kilt and bagpipe entrance music.[3] Piper earned the nicknames `Rowdy` and `Hot Rod` by displaying his trademark `Scottish` rage, spontaneity, and quick wit. According to The Daily Telegraph, he is `considered by many to be the greatest `heel` (or villain) wrestler ever`.[7]

One of wrestling`s most recognizable stars,[8] Piper headlined numerous PPV events, including the WWF and WCW`s respective premier annual events, WrestleMania and Starrcade. He accumulated 34 championships and hosted the popular WWF/E interview segment `Piper`s Pit`, which facilitated numerous feuds. In 2005, Piper was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by Ric Flair, who dubbed him `the most gifted entertainer in the history of professional wrestling`.[9]

Outside of wrestling, Piper acted in dozens of films and TV shows, most notably taking the lead role of John Nada in the 1988 cult classic They Live[10] and a recurring role as a deranged professional wrestler called Da` Maniac on the FX comedy series It`s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He is also widely known for his role in Hell Comes to Frogtown as the character Sam Hell.
